I really don't know the history or origin of Gay Hill.I was 10 years old and living in Bellville when my father took our family for a Sunday drive. He took us through Gay Hill, and we decided to stop for a moment at the general store. It was run by a couple of spinster sisters who had a distrust of men, and probably didn't like children, either.
We bought some Cokes, and my father had to lay the money on the counter. One of the women would pick it up, make change, and lay the change on the counter. I remember that the store had rows and rows of boxes
that contained buttontop shoes. I didn't know if they were for sale. The women also had a menagerie of about 30 cats that were running around loose outside. I don't know if the store is still open. Submitted by Darla Stark.
