One of many mines started in 1873. Many Yugoslavians, Basques, Italians and English lived here. Many stores, saloons, and boarding houses.Best remembered for the great fires and snowslides. Miss Ada Duhigg, deconess at Highland Boy Community House was one of my favorite personalities there. In about 1872 many claims were staked at this fork of the canyon the Highland Boy was the most successful. Many houses, hotels, boading houses, saloons, stores schools soon came. It was first settled by Yugoslavians, Italians, Basques and Englishmen but many other ethnic groups soon made the town home. It had it's Jap Camp and Greek Camp too. The town is still remembered for it's fires and snowslides. Submitted by: Eugene H. Halverson Highland Boy Courtesy Eugene H. Halverson Highland Boy Courtesy Eugene H. Halverson |
