In June of 1868 mormon pioneers settled Iron Town, after the Cedar City mining operation had failed nearly ten years earlier. By 1870, the town had close to a hundred residents. The city had built a foundry, machine shop, brick schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, and a pattern shop. Although Iron City seemed prosperous, the Iron Company was unable to overcome financial obstacles created by the money panic of 1874, and the lack of suitable transportation to northern Utah. In 1877, the iron operation closed. Submitted by: Jessica Roberts
