Bossburg once had the name Young America. In 1896, the town was re-named Bossburg in honor of its first citizen, C. S. Boss. The mines at Bossburg were lead and silver producing mines. The town grew up along the banks of the Columbia River and had a population of 800 in 1892. The town had stores, a school, a church and a meeting hall and, of course, a saloon or two. When mining operations slowed, a ferry across the Columbia River was established, a sawmill built for lumber operations all in a futile effort to keep the town alive. Many of the old buildings are gone but enough remains to make a visit interesting. Bossburg is located on highway 25 on the east bank of the Columbia River just south of the Canadian border.
