The first settlers in the Loomis area were cattle ranchers, then farmers and then miners. A rancher who gave the town its name was a J. H. Loomis who started what became a trading post and then a large general store that ultimately grew to be the largest business in town. During the early period of ranching in the area, various mines were discovered that gradually preempted farming in importance. There are many interesting stories about incidents involving the residents of Loomis too numerous to describe here except to say the town and its mining sites are worth a visit.
