Maryhill is located on highway 830 that runs along the north side of the Columbia River. High atop the cliffs at the point where the Columbia makes its turn west toward the Pacific Ocean stands Maryhill Castle, a huge gray monument built by Samuel Hill, a son-in-law of railroad tycoon, James Hill. Still subject to speculation is the question of the castle being a memorial to its builder's wife, Mary Hill, daughter of James Hill, or for some unknown reason. In any event, Sam Hill named the palace-residence Maryhill, a name which today identifies the town. Construction was started in 1913 and almost completed in 1926. The Samuel Hills lived in a mansion in Seattle and it is not known as a fact that they ever occupied the castle as a residence. The castle is now a museum and well worth the visit.
