The Chinooks were the original settlers a Nahcotta. They were guaranteed and ample food supply by the millions of oysters growing on the flats of the harbor. The abundance of fish attracted whites to the area, the first resident being a J. A. Moorehead in 1890. He was soon joined by others with families to form the beginning of a village. With later settlers came a store, other buildings and businesses and a post office. The village became a town and named itself after a local Indian chief, Nahcotta. In 1899, the town became the terminus of a short line narrow-gauge railroad. The only reason for its existence was the connection with the ferry from Astoria, Oregon. Nahcotta today is a resort settlement. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
