The first gold strike in Republic was in February, 1896. By the first of May that year, the town had a name and a newspaper. By fall, there were fifty log and canvas cabins, two hotels, four restaurants, five stores, three livery stables and a host of other businesses. By 1900, the growth of Republic was in the direction of brothels and saloons, the latter numbering up to twenty-eight. The dominant structure today is the old Church of the Immaculate Conception. The edifice stands on a steep hillside and can be seen for miles around. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth. |
