The Semiahmoo Spit is about a mile long and contains about 125 acres of land. It is just south of the international border between Canada and the extreme northwestern United States mainland. Prospectors streamed into the area around 1858 bound for the Fraser River and beyond. Semiahmoo Spit seemed a logical place from which to launch into the wilderness. A trading post was opened on the spit in 1858 and its owner platted the town of Semiahmoo City. He expected it to become a boomtown and hoped to cash in on the migration. As the years past, it became evident that the town's future would be tied to the fishing industry and in particular, the canning of salmon. This was the impetus for the its growth until 1980 when the land was purchased by a land development corporation. Today the entire spit and headland form a pleasant community, officially a part of Blaine. However, the community around the western side of Drayton Harbor continues to be referred to as simply "Semiahmoo."Submitted by Henry Chenowith.
