Located in the heavily timbered Cascades, Sultan was a combination mining and lumbering town. Prospectors found a few nuggets of gold in the Sultan River in 1870 and that started the town. There was no boom until the Great Northern Railroad built its tracks through the Cascades. The effect on the town was to expand an already rowdy mining camp into a sprawling mass of shacks. Sultan is now a quiet, respectable town with the buildings remaining from its earlier period on a back street. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
