James T. Gifford founded Port Ulao in 1847. He built a 1000 foot pier jutting out into Lake Michigan where fisherman could stop to clean and smoke their fish. He also sold wood to lake ships for fuel. In 1853, Daniel Wells and John Howe took over the town. However, it began to decline soon after the lake ships stopped using wood as fuel.
