A mine on the south side of New River was opened in about 1880 at a location called Elm. The ore was transfered first via cable and bucket to the north side of the river where it was transfered by tipple to a train. This north side area later became known as Caperton. By 1917 Caperton had a post office. In 1910 the town had a population of 200 and by 1920 it had 525 people leaving here. |
