Fort Fred Steele was a military fort charged with guarding the railroad from the indians from 1868 to 1886. When the indian threat passed Fort Steele was used by the remaining civilians in logging efforts. The logs were floated down the North Platte to the fort where they would be cut into railroad ties and fence posts. At one time housed a sheep sheering facility. The fort saw a brief economic revival after the building of the Lincoln Highway in 1922 but saw its final days with the rerouting of the highway in 1939 and the demise of the tie industry.
