COMMENTS:
A ghost island!I have been there. I took a Yacht from Sault Ste. Marie to Cockburn island where the former township is situated. The scenery is beautiful, and sparcely touched by man. Make the time to go there, its great! REMAINS: Many old homes in pretty good shape. |
Cockburn Island is about 10 km by 10 km in size and is situated across the 2 km wide Mississagi Strait from the western end of Manitoulin Island. The island was settled in the late 1800's and at its peak the population may have exceeded 1,000 inhabitants. After World War II, a steady migration back to the mainland began, and now there are perhaps only two or three year-round residents. However, many former islanders use their old homes as summer cottages, and as many as 200 may gather on the island in July and August. There are only about three year round residents on the whole island!
