Cody is one of the most haunting of of ghost towns in British Columbia’s famed “Valley of the Ghosts” region. The former mining community, tucked in the lush mountains of the West Kootenay area in southern British Columbia, was one of scores of rich mineral mines that sprang up in the valley in the late 1800s.The town and mine were located about 20 miles west of the town of Kaslo on the road that serviced Sandon — the area’s most famed ghost town. To reach Cody, visitors must drive five miles to Sandon, followed by another two on the same road, which at times is extremely narrow and hazardous. In 1897, Cody had a population of about 150 residents, who were serviced by three hotels, a post office, livery, blacksmith shop, a dress maker and three laundries. The main employer of the town were the operators of the Noble Five Mine, which closed in the early 1940s following a devastating fire.Today, there is a breathtaking array of ruins — especially those of the old minesite — and a selction of old buildings still standing for the enjoyment of photographers. Like Sandon, Cody has been earmarked for provincial government heritage protection. Submitted by Johnnie Bachusky Submitted by: Johnnie Bachusky
