NAME: Alma COUNTY: Pinal ROADS: 2WD LEGAL INFO: 1 CLIMATE: Hot in summer, warm in winter BEST TIME TO VISIT: Easily accessible throughout the year |
COMMENTS:
What remains of Alma is on private property, although some of the remnants are visible from the road; Alma was located on the west bank of the San Pedro River, south of Winkelman. REMAINS: There are wooden (water tanks), concrete (ore chute), and metal (ore buckets, etc.) as well as a small slag heap on the property of the current owner. |
Alma was founded in 1891 by Frank M Doll, who was also the first (and only) postmaster (the Post Office was in existence until 1898; it closed after Mr Doll's assassination in that year). From the remains, it would appear that mining activity took place far more recently, but precisely when is not known. The slag heap appears to be of manganese ore, but we would appreciate hearing from anyone who has more recent and detailed information. Submitted by: Kurt Wenner | Alma Courtesy Kurt Wenner |
