Contention City's post office was established April 6, 1880 and discontinued November 26, 1888. Contention City had three mills, the Grand Central, Head Center and the Contention. Layed out on the San Pedro river for the water, Contention City served nearby Tombstone for about ten years until the mines in Tombstone flooded. Today only a few foundations remain.
