The Hillside mine was originally discovered in 1887 and sold five years later for $400,000. The buyer never did follow through with raising the capital to turn it into a big operation, and after a few years the site reverted back to the original owner, John Lawler. In the 1930's a full scale operation was underway and over $1,000,000 was produced.
