FRENCH GULCH

NAME: French Gulch
COUNTY: Shasta
ROADS: 2WD
GRID #(see map): 1
CLIMATE: Mild winter, warm summer
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
Anytime.
COMMENTS: Settled by the 49ers. Was a rich gold mining area; was northern California's most famous gold mining district at one time. The main industry is STILL gold mining. Most of the downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it's a sleepy little town in a beautiful setting beside Clear Creek. Take Hwy. 299W to the French Gulch Road turnoff just west of Whiskeytown Lake. You can stay overnite at the historic hotel.
REMAINS: National Register of Historic Places building: French Gulch Hotel where you can eat, drink, and spend the night. Franck's Store, once a miner's store, now the local meeting place and waterhole and unofficial museum. The Oddfellow's Hall is also still in use. The old church burned to the ground 11-20-98. French Gulch is home to approximately 200 residents who fervantly protect their beloved community.

The mainstay was gold mining and still is to this day. Probably home to 200 residents, plus or minus a few.
