One of the first and richest mines in Stray Horse Canyon was a mine named Adelaide. It was in 1876 that a town began to form around the mine. It was obvious that the town be named Adelaide, and it was. Although usually considered a suburb of Leadville, the town was never included within its city limits allowing Adelaide to have a life of its own. The town had around twenty-eight business buildings including four saloons, a mining engineer, lawyer, post office and stores. The post office was discontinued in 1880 and as with most of the Leadville “suburbs,” nothing remains of Adelaide.
