Known as "The Place were winds were born", Caribou is located at 9800 feet. Sam Conger was the discoverer of the Caribou mine. He found out from the Araphahoe indians about their "Treasure Mountain" but was unable to search until they were moved by the government. In August, 1869 he & 5 partners staked the Caribou and Conger mines. The Caribou mine produced an est. $8 million before closing in 1884. It was Caribou which gave rise to Colorado being known as the "Silver State". Caribou City was organized in Sept, 1870 & by spring, 1871 ahd over 400 people. There were no "shady ladies" as the town fathers booted them to the town of Cardinal. For President Grant's visit to Central City in 1882, silver bricks were sent from Caribou to line the walkway to the Teller House. The 70# silver bars were used because gold was felt to be too common for such an important person. In 1876, silver ore from Caribou was displayed in the Philadelphia Centenial Exposition.Caribou suffered 2 major fires - in September, 1879 from which it rebuilt, and again in 1899, when most of the downtoen area was destroyed. It was not rebuilt. By 1880 the population dwindled to 549, by 1900 only 44 remained. The last resident died in 1944. Submitted by: Tincy Royer and Missy Brown

UPDATE: Hello, I'd like to correct the information you have on the ghosttown of Caribou, Colorado. Your information states that there are no current residents. This is not true. My wife and myself have lived here year-round in the ghosttown for the past six years. We caretake the Aquarius Silver Mine for Tom Hendricks. Our cabin and the mine are located on the western end of the townsite (behind the Keep Out/ No Trespassing signs). Indeed this is the place where the winds are born. This is my home. Thanks! Pat and Danielle McCarville
