COMMENTS:
Near Idaho Springs. REMAINS: Much mining activity remnants. |
Freeland was born about 1880 with some rich strikes nearby. It soon had a population of more than four hundred and some eighty cabins and frame houses, two stores, a saloon and a public school. It was a peaceful, industrious community. As with many other mining towns, Freeland depended upon the mines for its survival. When the mines faded, so did Freeland. The route to Freeland is lined with shafthouses and mine dumps once the source of prosperity for the mining camp. For the brave hearted a frightening four-mile drive over a ledge road, make more for four-wheel drive vehicles than a standard auto, will take the interested to the ghost of Freeland.
