GLADSTONE

NAME: Gladstone
COUNTY: San Juan
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 7
CLIMATE: Cool winter with snow, cool summer
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
Summer
COMMENTS: At the end of SR 110 out of Silverton.
REMAINS: Current mining operation, many original buildings.
Some of the highest peaks in Colorado are home to a number of old mining camps. Among them is Gladstone. If one is visiting Animas Forks, Eureka and Silverton, the one time “hub” of the mining area, one might also want to visit Gladstone by traveling from Silverton up Cement Creek to Gladstone. Like the rest of the early towns, Gladstone is on a mountainside. Not many buildings are standing but foundations and mining equipment are evidence of what went on during the 1880s and 90s.
