This town was originally established by the owners of the Portland Mine in 1895 and by 1900 had a population of 3500 people. A strong union town, the city was heart of the labor wars from 1895-1903. 3/4 of all ore from the entire mining district was shipped here as the town was on such level ground. $30,000,000 in gold was produced from the Portland mine by 1911. Begun as Independence, Goldfield reached a population of 3000. One can still visit the sites today right on the highway. October 1903. Camp Goldfield of the Colorado Militia, just below the Portland mine, was the result of labor difficulties in the district. The mine owners and the miners had continual problems until about 1905 when the miners who were giving the owners trouble were shipped out of the district. (Colorado Historical Society).
