The old railroad used to pass through Hartsel where there are still remains of cattle chutes, a frame station and long mounds of what looks like dirt where the railroad ran out of town. Hartsel was the main area for loading cattle, sheep and hay, it also had a Hotel (Foundation is all that is left and built over), a very large water tank, telegraph office, sawmill and a freight depot. Samuel Hartsel(a big rancher for which the town is named after) used to pump hot water from the hot spring to his house using drilled out wooden logs. The Native Americans used to come to Hartsel before it was a town to use the hot springs. As of 2000 the population was 677.
