Nederland has been called "that dismal little mining town" by one of its well-known visitors. It wasn't a "pretty" town for it was too busy being a mining center for one of the richest gold and silver areas in the state, and then one of the richest tungsten centers in the world. Nederland thrived all through the 1880s and 90s as a supply, smelting and shipping center for the mining camps in the area. With the discovery of tungsten in the early 1900s, activity increased even more. But it wasn't until the outbreak of World War I, when tungsten prices skyrocketed, that the find brought the stampede. However, the bottom fell out of the tungsten market when the mineral was imported from South America and Japan at less cost. Tungsten is still produced in the Nederland area, but its nothing like it was. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
