Located on the western side of the Rockies at an elevation of around 9,000 feet, Pitkin got its start in the 1870s mining silver. The town never achieved the reputation of a Leadville and others better known for richer ore and more saloons. Although Pitkin had a now and then incidence of violence and its share of saloons and bawdy houses as did every other mining town, it was considered one of the more "conservative" camps in the area. Pitkin's most productive years were 1891 and 1892. The crash of 1893 caused all mining operations to be suspended. The town limped along and stayed alive but suffered a major depression in the mid 1930s that was the beginning of its further decline. Many early day buildings are in good repair and the town is full of relics from better days. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
