The city was named because of a rather obvious reason; placer gold was found here. That was in 1876. Long after the placer gold had played out, Placerville began to grow as a ranching community. Cattle came first and then the sheep. The town did not escape the early range wars typical of that era. As happened throughout the west, cattlemen hated sheepmen and visa versa. Given time, the two elements learned to live together but only after several sheep ranchers had been killed. Much of the business section was destroyed by fire in 1919 but was rebuilt.
