Rico, which is Spanish for rich, is now a current mining center for Silver, Gold, Copper and Lead. In 1878, the town really sprang up and by 1879 there were about 30 businesses there with a population of 600. For a long time, transportation costs of the ore made Rico a hard place to make money, but in 1891, Otto Mears railroad reached Rico and profits soared. Rico has never really completely died since then and has mined much Gold, Silver, Lead, Zinc, Copper, Tin and Uranium. Today there is a small gas station and many old buildings left.
