Perhaps the only mining town to be purchased lock, stock and barrel by interests who had no use for mining, Spar City was saved by a group of prohibitionists from Kansas who bought the town for their own purpose. That purpose was to have a "place of their own" where they could spend their vacations fishing and hunting in scenic beauty. Spar City was a growing silver mining town when silver was demonetized in 1893 leaving the town with no other means of income. Food supplies dwindled to the point where people actually had nothing to eat. Its sister city, Creede, came to the rescue by providing food for the hungry population of Spar City until 1905 when the Kansas group bought the entire town. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
