Right on the paved highway. UPDATE: ITS
GONE! SEE THE NEWS STORY. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE
MORON THE OWNER IS! REMAINS: 3 buildings and mining remnants. |
Summit was a stage and railroad stop on the road between Silverton and Ouray. Summit is located at the top of Red Mountain Pass right on the side of the road. Summit was known for its saloons that gave people a breather before heading down the mountain to either Ouray or Silverton. Submitted by: Todd Underwood
A few weeks ago I posted a message on the ghottowns.com bulletin board about a newspaper article I read in the Durango Herald about a fellow named Baumgartner who had some historic structures bulldozed on what may not have been his property. I also posted a link to the ariticle. I wasn't sure which buildings were torn down, but at first thought it might have been what you list as "Summit", Colorado on the ghosttowns site. Then, as I read more, I thought it wasn't. Well, I went past that area yesterday and was horrified to find that yes, indeed, it was "Summit", on the top of Red Mountain Pass. I had been by there just a couple weeks before the fellow bulldozed those buildings, and they were pretty much the same as the photos listed on site. I am sending along some photos I took yesterday, and as you can see, Summit is not the same. This fellow Baumgartner is trying to sell home lots in the area, and owns land upon which many, many historic structures currently exist, but apparently not for long, if he has his way. He also plans to sell off the headframe to the Yankee Girl mine in the same area, and the new owner will dismantle it and ship it to Montrose, Colorado, to be part of some manufactured "ghost town" there. This fellow is already one of the most hated men in Ouray and San Juan counties because of his actions, and we need to make our voice heard throughout the ghostowner's world and try to do everything we can to stop this thing from happening again. -Cary Nickel |
