An old mineing town REMAINS: Old cattle pens and a few old houses |
Tabaco became a community in 1901. it's only a mile from Road Canyon and 17 miles from Trinidad. It had only one store that was run by the colorado supply co. they had 2 physicians, Dr. A.L Trout{surgeon for Tabaco and Berwind} and Dr. George D. Andrews{general practitioner.} There was a rail road but they had no passenger service, it only hauled coal. Out of a population of 1,500... 485 of them worked in the mine. When coal mining became uneconomical the mine closed, people moved else where, the railroad stopped running and the post offices shut down. Submitted by: Crystal M Rowell "Chuck" |
