Agricola was a company town, built in 1907 for employees of Swift and Co., which operated a food processing plant and phosphate mining operation. It was a self-contained community, with streets, shops, houses, and a school. All of the residents were factory workers and their families. This lasted until the mid-1950's when the phosphate industry greatly expanded and the need for providing housing for employees no longer existed. Town residents were offered a chance to purchase and move their house, and whatever was not relocated was dismantled and destroyed. Thus ended the town of Agricola. Swift and Co. later became Estech Chemical and still operates at the former townsite. Submitted by: Jim Pike
