COMMENTS:
Located between Fort Drum and Okeechobee City. Take 441 to NE 224th Street, head east. Hilolo is near the intersection of 224 and 48th Ave. This is in a remote part of the state with farms and scattered countryside residents. REMAINS: Partial railroad depot foundation |
Hilolo began in 1914 when the Kissimmee Valley Extension of the Florida East Coast Railroad was completed through Fort Drum. About five miles southeast of Fort Drum the railroad constructed a station and gave it the name Hilolo. The town grew to have a population of around 500. Little information exists about the community. When the railroad line was discontinued the town died out. Submitted by: Jim Pike |
