COMMENTS:
The town site is approximately at the intersection of SR 19 and Lake Dorr Road about 2 miles north of SR42 REMAINS: Little to none |
In 1883 George T. Pittman migrated from Kentucky and established the town of Pittman near Lake Dorr. The first store owner, Murray Thomas, also owned the hotel. Both hotel and store were eventually sold to a gentleman named J.M. Money. The town had a Presbyterian Church and a newspaper called the “Pittman Argus.” The local bank was owned by the Pittman, Thomas, Robinson & Company. As in many Central Florida towns the demise of the community came from the terrible freezes in 1894 & 1895. After the citrus crops were destroyed the residents moved on to other areas.
