RUNNYMEDE

NAME: Runnymede
COUNTY: Osceola
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 3
CLIMATE: Moderate
BEST TIME TO VISIT: All year
COMMENTS: My grandmother was born here in 1894.
REMAINS: I do not believe there are any remains of this town.

I believe it was a logging town just east of the present day St. Cloud, Florida. I found it on an 1895 map of Florida. Submitted by: William M Roberts

Originally called Wharton, Runnymede was founded in 1885 on Lake Runnymede. Beauchamp Watson owned a home, store and other local structures. He also operated the 3 story Runnymede Hotel which supplied the guests with activities such as horseback riding, tennis, croquet, a library, and evening dances. The railroad line known as the Sugar Belt Railway had a depot in the area. Disston Drainage Company used the hotel as its headquarters at one time. In 1920 J. Edward Krause of Indianapolis, bought the hotel and did some extensive remodeling as well as adding guest cottages. Abandoned since the late 20's John J. Padgett bought the hotel in the 1940's and dismantled it. Mike Woodfin
