Two miles north of CR 42 on the St. Johns River. There is a St. Francis Recreation area off CR 42 that has a hiking trail to near the town site. There are dirt trail hunting roads that travel back close to the site but you will need local directions. One of the roads is the old St. Francis wagon road. REMAINS: Very Little |
St. Francis, which earlier was called Old Town, was a river town that served the steam boat traffic on the St. Johns River in 1888. They had a post office from March 15, 1888 to Oct. 15 1909. When the train line came out of Jacksonville in 1886 it began taking the business from the steamboats. In a few years the town was deserted.
