Verna, originally called St. Claire, had a turpentine still in 1914. It was named Verna, in 1925, after the daughter of John Posey who incorporated the town. Verna was promoted before the Depression as the Town of Verna. Receiving a Post Office in 1916 the residents also constructed a school, grocery store, restaurant, and hotel by sometime in the 1920's. The death of Verna came in 1929 when the stock market crashed and the Florida Legislature removed the towns charter. Submitted by: Mike Woodfin | Old site of Verna. Courtesy Mike Woodfin |
