REMAINS: Remains of underground earthen works. Well preserved.
This fort, built in 1861, is important as the end of Sherman's destructive march and infamous "March to the Sea" during the Civil War. The fort resisted a bombardment from iron clad Union ships until Sherman's arrival in 1864. There is also a Civil War museum on site. Submitted by: Mike Woodfin
