William Hooper of Boston established many sugar mills on Kaui and Oahu starting in 1835. When gold was discovered in California in 1848, sugar mills on Maui branched out into Irish potato cultivation. The Ka'anapali, Maui sugar cane mill is a prime example. These sugar mills greatly contributed to providing a supply of sugar, molasses and potatoes to "gold rushers." This became the C&H sugar company of recent times. Submitted by: Keith Kersting
