STIBNITE

NAME: Stibnite
COUNTY: Valley
ROADS: 4WD
GRID: 3
CLIMATE: Cool winter/snow and summer.
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
Fall, Spring, Summer.
COMMENTS: Much to see in the area.
REMAINS: Many original remnants.

Discovered during the Thunder Mountain rush of the early 1900s, Stibnite became famous for its mercury, antimony, gold and tungsten ores. The Meadow Creek mine was one of the earliest followed by a number of others. All were started by tunneling. World War II saw the beginning of the open pit mine that became the leading producer of vital tungsten. The conclusion of the war saw the closing of the mine and the huge mill has since been dismantled. Enough remains, however, to make a visit worthwhile.
