ORIENTAL POWDER MILLS

NAME: Oriental Powder Mills
COUNTY: Cumberland
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 5
CLIMATE: Northern New England
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Summer/Fall, very buggy in Spring
COMMENTS: Access via Gambo Road off Rt. 237, follow to end at discontinued bridge. Majority of areas of interest on East side of road. Property is part of the Gorham/Sebago Regional Land Trust. Some short hiking trails, vandals have destroyed most of the footbridges. Access is difficult near end of road as local sandpit operator tries to block road with gravel, as he would like the property for his sandpit. Most locals just drive over, there is a good area for hand carry boat launching on Presumpscot River.
REMAINS: Remains of Cumberland and Oxford Canal and towpath, several foundations.
Produced one third of Norths' gunpowder during Civil War. Abandoned late 1800's, as was the Canal. No buildings or barracks remain, but several foundations and the old canal/towpath is very obvious. Submitted by: R.Currier
