DONKEN

NAME: Donken
COUNTY: Houghton
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Temperate all year round. Often quite warm during summer time.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Mid-Late Summer/Early-Mid Fall
COMMENTS: A small anual population, allbeit unstable. Located 20 miles south of Houghton on Highway 141 between Painesdale and Twin Lakes, there are many abandoned buildings along the highway upon which Donken rests.
REMAINS: Donken is home to many old buildings, a few inhabited, the rest are idol. The remaining structures at Donken are rather unsighlty, extreemly weathered and cannot be expected to last-out much longer that they already have.
Over the years, the name of this hamlet was spelled several different ways, as Donkyn, and Donkeyn. Located 20 miles south of Houghton on Highway 141 between Painesdale and Twin Lakes. During the 1930s, the population of this Copper Range Railroad village was only 100. Although Donken had a post office in 1935, only two mailboxes remain at Donken nowadays (2004). Now Donken is a collection of quite obscene, dereclict wooden shacks on either sides of the road. Submitted by: Ryan J. Hill
