Settled in 1813, the town was originally named "Wood's Hole," in honor of the first shopkeeper in the area, M.S. Wood. In 1893, the name was changed to "Wood" and the city rapidly grew, rivaling the size of Bunn, another small town in the county. In June of 1917, a town charter was written up and ratified. Wood became a town on July 1st, 1917

At its height in 1927, Wood boasted two churches, a railroad station, a gas station, several shops and businesses, and a population of about 1,000 people.

After World War Two, facing growing economic prosperity and the decline of Wood's population, the town charter was repealed in 1961, followed by the last formal resident leaving in 1968
