Adams diggings. Names for a man reputed to have discovered a fabulous gold mine in the malpais w of grants during the fall of 1864. Other reports place the location in the mogollon mts. Adams and his companions were reported to have mined a considerable amount of gold and then to have sent men for supplies to ftl wingate, which at that time was established a few miles s of grants, near san rafael. These men were waylaid and killed by apaches, as were all the other members of the party except adams, a companion named davidson (who was away from camp with adams when the apaches attacked), and a man named brewer, who may have escaped and found his way to the spanish settlement on the rio grande. There was a post office at this settlement from 1930 to 1946.
