CHANCE CITY. Post office 1885/1886 REMAINS: Lots of ruins are easily found. Rock and adobe buildings. Mine shafts and tunnels. Use extreme caution. |
CHANCE CITY. About 20 miles west of Deming and 20 miles East of LordsburgLeave I 10 at 'Gage' exit and go south, past Bowlins TeePee for 2 1/2miles. Turn right off the pavement and Chance is 1 1/2 miles down the dirt road. Many mining towns died waiting for railroads and several railroads alter their routes to accomodae mines, but Chance City, also known as Victorio , was lucky; when ore was discovered in the Victorio Mountains in the 1880's, the brand new Southern Pacific main line was only four miles away. That was the community's principal good fortune, however, for only a modest half million dollars in gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc wereextracted from the mines in the area including the Last Chance, which was owned by Randolph Hearst. The mining efforts there lasted until the 1930's, but the post office closed a year after it had opened in 1866. Submitted by: Samuel W McWhorter |
