Derry was
founded about 1869 by Hispanic settlers seeking land under the Homestead Act of 1862. It had a school by 1898 and a church in 1904. There was a brief boom in the 1920s, when manganese and fluorspar were mined in nearby mountains. Today, Derry is a small farming community.
