The discovery of silver gave Fleming its start in 1882. Named after a Jack Fleming, one of owners of the Old Man Mine, the town had a rapid expansion and by the next year had a population of 250 to300 people. All was not well within Fleming. The town enforced definite ethnic restrictions. Chinese were not allowed in the town. Mexicans could not work in the mines. The first murder at Fleming occurred in October, 1884. The victim was a Negro that had set up a bakery shop. Less than two months later, other shootings occurred and the town had no officer of the law. Courtesy Henry Chenoweth.
