HORSE SPRINGS. Ranching community on NM 12, 26 mi SW of Datil. 1/2 mi E of the original Horse Springs, a very large spring. Named because some soldiers on the way to Ft. Tularosa from Socorro lost a horse and on the way back found it here.The horse was introduced into the Americas by the Spanish settlements to the south. Castaneda reports that "the most essential thing in new lands is horses. They instill the greatest fear in the enemy and make the Indians respect the leaders of the army" 'Narratives, 1540, 1542 (Albuquerque, 1940), p. 282. Also called Northern Lake, 1 1/2 mi long, fed by underground springs. A sizeable lake of 600 or more acres, half on the icarilla Apache Indian Reservation, 20 mi W of Parkview. Many horses have been drowned in it during the winter months when snow is deep. They wander onto the lake to feed on the tall tules and fall through the ice.HORSE LAKE CREEK. Rio Arriba county.
