| La lande. Different versions are given about the name. A merchant of kaskaskia sent a frenchman, la lande, in 1804 over the santa fe trail. Zebulon pike refers to baptiste la lande in his expedition (1810), but there is nothing to confirm this early visitor in association with a later settlement. There is an unconfirmed report that th town was named for a long time employee of the sf rr who died during its construction, around 1905. All trains on the system were stopped on the day of his burial. The early homesteaders here were unable to make a living on the barren land and soon left when the county seat was established at nearby ft. Sumner. Postoffice from 1906 / 1955.
